HEALTH BENEFITS

dZi amber jade

Why did the ancient people wear beads? Why was amber used in herbal teas and Chinese medicines?

Beads are classified as organic or inorganic materials. The organic materials Master Li uses for himself and others include coral, shell, pearl and amber. The inorganic materials he uses include jade, dZi and chungzi beads, which are etched or unetched agate or carnelian.

Although substances, such as pearl and amber, have been found in Chinese medicine to contain medicinal properties, many of the healing ingredients are destroyed by the body's gastric juices if taken internally. Ingredients in certain substances may even trigger serious side effects or sickness. But by wearing certain materials close to the body, however, their molecules may be absorbed by the body, thereby allowing its healing functions to work.

Through Master Li's extensive research and personal testing, he has found that different beads have different medicinal functions when worn.

dZi - Background. dZi beads are one of the most treasured and mysterious beads known today. The oldest dZi beads, which date as far back as 4,000 years ago, came from the Mesopotamia area (Iraq, Middle East), Afganistan, India, Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan, etc. But the most important and valuable dZi beads originated in Tibet about the time that Buddhism spread to Tibet during the Tang Dynasty (approximately 1,300 years ago). Tang Emperor Tai-Jong sent his adopted daughter, Princess Man-Shing, to become the bride of the King of Tibet as a strategy to harmonize the relationship between Tibet and China. Princess Man-Shing brought along with her Buddhism and a statue of Kwan-Yin (the Goddess of Mercy) which had many pure Tibetan dZi beads mounted on it, including many Nine-Eyes, Perpetual-Life Pots (or Precious Water Pots), Lotus, and Tiger-Tooths. The Tibetan people loved Man-Shing, and the King adopted Buddhism to blend in with their original Bon Faith and to use Buddhism to tame the people so that he could secure his reign. The Kwan-Yin statue is currently on display and maintained at the Temple Da-Chiu in Tibet.

The general belief is that after the Tang Dynasty, there was a void of several hundred years in which dZi beads were not produced in Tibet. However, China and neighboring countries did produce dZi beads during this time. dZi beads that are 1,300 years and older are classified as Ancient; beads 100 to 350 years old are of the Middle Period; and beads less than 10 years old are of the New Period (new replica).

dZi beads hold great symbolic and religious significance, with many different artistic patterns associated with them. The most common dZi bead is of etched agate, which, instead of its design being formed by cutting into its surface as the word "etched" would imply, a chemical treatment is applied to create the patterns unique to the dZi. Besides the age and purity of dZi beads, usually the higher the number of “eyes” on a dZi bead, the more desirable and higher the bead is in value. dZi beads with an odd number of eyes are more important than dZi beads with an even number of eyes. Different eyes and designs represent different Buddhist symbolism based on the birth Zodiac of the user. In Tibet, females generally wear longer beads, while males wear shorter and rounder beads. Although there are several types of dZi beads, the most important type is of etched agate and appears to have a dark brown background with a white pattern, but actually the white color is the background. Other varieties of dZi beads include Chungzi and etched/unetched carnelian. Click on the picture above to see a larger view of a few different varieties of old dZi beads. If you would like to learn more about Buddhist symbolism of our dZi beads, please e-mail Master Li.

Health Benefit. dZi beads can help dissipate excessive body heat (also known as “sick wind” in Chinese medicine), which is one of the main causes of illness. They may also help calm the wearer’s mental state and promote physical and spiritual harmony. dZi beads made in ancient times contain more healing properties than modern-made beads, because ancient materials contain more energy and can become even more powerful the more they are worn. Larger beads have a stronger energy field and more healing effects than smaller beads, but the value of some small beads are higher than beads of larger sizes. Master Li will be writing a book and/or producing a video teaching the wearers how to apply dZi beads for healing, health keeping, beautification, and pain-relieving, and also the correct way to wear and maintain the beads to keep them working for the owners. In the meantime, if you have questions about the benefits of our dZi beads, please feel free to e-mail Master Li.

Amber - Based on Master Li's findings, amber was used regularly for healing and health enhancement in ancient Chinese medicine - a belief that is still practiced today. There are many varieties of amber; some are a very rare occurrence in nature. Amber beads are mainly separated by their color, transparency, texture or grains, and locality. As shown below, color plays a large role in determining the specific benefit(s) an amber bead may have on the body; this being because different colors of beads affect the body differently when light passes through them. Benefits include detoxification, increased blood circulation, and improved heart, liver, kidney, and intestinal function.
